Glow in the dark art can turn your bedroom into an awesome nighttime dreamscape. But to keep glow art glowing brightly, it needs to be properly charged and done safely especially in kid's rooms.

How the Glow Works

Glow in the dark art contains phosphors, special materials that absorb and store light energy. When the lights go out, they slowly release this energy as a soft, luminous glow. The brightness and duration of the glow depend on the quality of the phosphors and the type of light used for charging.

Not all light sources are equal, so it's important to choose the right one for the best results.

Are UV Lights Safe?

LED UV lights can super charge a mural, canopy or stars really fast, within seconds if held closely. Mounted on a wall it can still charge my art within minutes. 

The LED UV flood lights and bars/ party lights you can buy on Temu or amazon are around 395nm and are not dangerous for casual use. Even though they are weaker, avoid staring into them as they can still irritate eyes and possibly skin. In a children's room I'd limit use, and make sure the light is fixed up high and angled away. 

UV lights at 365nm are much stronger and shouldn't be used in bedrooms, these will damage your skin and eyes. If you were using one of these, you'd need protective glasses. 

Other Ways to Charge Glow in the Dark Art

1. Sunlight – The Natural Charger

Natural daylight is one of the best ways to charge glow art. If possible, position your painting where the paint can absorb light during the day. If the time between sundown and bedtime is longer you'll need to top up the painting with a bright room light as well. Try the following:

 2. Bright Torch or Flashlight – Also Quick and Intense

A high-powered flashlight (e.g., 3000 lumens) can provide an instant, targeted charge, making the colors pop dramatically. However, these flashlights can get hot and are super bright, so shouldn't be given to kids.

3. LED & CFL Bulbs – Convenient and Safe

Energy-efficient LED or compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) in room light fittings are excellent for charging glow art before bedtime. Just leave them on for a while, and let the art soak in the light.

4. LED UV flood lights or bars – The Ultimate Boost

UV blacklight tubes or LED UV lights are the super quick way to charge glow art. They emit high-energy ultraviolet light, which excites phosphors quickly and makes the glow extra vivid. Perfect for an instant, intense charge!

What Doesn’t Work Well ❌

• Incandescent bulbs – These traditional bulbs emit mostly heat and not enough of the right light wavelengths to charge glow murals effectively.

• Candles - Way too dim. 

• Phone - Not bright enough!
